Baseball Announcing

One of my favorite spats of announcing can be found here in this 25 second clip from 2007. I must confess, I have always enjoyed listening to the Sox announcers, and they are far more entertaining than the FOX crew. In other news, I am still busy, and my backlog of available posts has reached [...]

Offense

This has to be just about the worst batting stance that I have ever seen. I think it tops even one that I saw exhibited by some Caribbean player in Japan, who used a wide stance with his back to the pitcher while arcing about 25 degrees away from the z axis. This however, is [...]

Way Back

I somehow came across this on YouTube. It is the footage from the Opening Day introductions of the 1993 Detroit Tigers. I recognized a few of the names, mostly in the starting lineup, but most of the players were unknowns to me. It is amazing how long ago that feels, and is in baseball terms.

Amusing Nicknames

It has come to my attention that the Detroit News is using a better variant of a nickname that the Detroit Tigers had been given in my neck of the woods. Without further ado, I bring your attention to “Miggy and the Mud Hens.” You may now continue to observe their losing streaks.

Manager Hall of Fame

I thought I’d take this opportunity to highlight this famous Earl Weaver diatribe. Despite my own preferences against swearing overly much, and I still enjoyed this clip.

The 2010 All Star Game

I watched the MLB All Star Game last night, and was somewhat disappointed in the AL’s 3:1 loss. My chief beefs were with the American League’s manager, Joe Girardi. The two most notable instances were as follows.

World Cup

Germany lost today, 1:0 against Spain. That is somewhat unfortunate, as Germany provides me the only thing worthwhile about the sport. However, this afternoon I noted that the fans of the sport were out in force again. Comments were generally along the lines of “THIS WAS THE WORST GAME EVER!” “&&(*&@(*!)@*#)@” This has led me [...]

Odd Tidbit

I discovered last night that the great nephew of Eddie Gaedel, the best walker in the game of baseball, attends the same university as I do. For those unfamiliar, Eddie Gaedel was the 3’7″ gentleman who played for the St. Louis Browns for one game in 1951 as a promotional stunt. He walked in his [...]

2010 Tigers

Dear MLB, Could you possibly endeavor to have just one important call go the Tigers’ way this season? I would rather like to see my team’s first perfect game, and a potential win against the Braves. Mit freundlichen Grüßen, マルコ PS: In this case, I do acknowledge that the umpire just flat out stank all [...]

2010 Football World Cup

Lately, I have been following the football world cup. I do not know precisely how this came about, seeing as I find the sport to be inherently dull at best, completely boring at worst. I suspect that is something to do with watching preferred countries face off against less loved opponents. Whatever, the reason, I [...]
